CKMN September Meeting Recap: Park Aerospace Corp.
CKMN members gathered on Tuesday, September 23 at Park Aerospace in Newton, Kansas, for a day of networking, lunch, and an exclusive behind-the-scenes facility tour.
Park Aerospace Corp. develops and manufactures advanced composite materials, primary and secondary structures and assemblies, and low-volume tooling for the aerospace industry. Their Newton facility is a prime example of adaptability in action. As General Manager Cory Nickel shared with the group, Park has repeatedly evolved, changing its name and shifting its product offerings to stay ahead in a rapidly changing global market.
During the tour, attendees got an inside look at how Park’s strategic investments in high cost, advanced machinery drive their business forward. Automation and innovative machining processes have significantly reduced labor-intensive tasks, while a strong focus on cleaning, maintenance, and continuous improvement keeps production efficient and precise.
Cory also highlighted Park’s commitment to workforce development. By designing certain roles that can be filled with on the job training rather than requiring specialized degrees, they are opening doors for more people to enter the aerospace manufacturing field. As a United States based manufacturer sourcing most materials domestically, Park has also minimized exposure to tariffs, a strategic decision that strengthens their competitive edge.
Like many manufacturers, Park faces workforce challenges, particularly with recruitment and retention in a smaller community. Their focus remains on building talent from the local area, which presents unique hurdles but also opportunities to invest deeply in their workforce and community.
The visit offered members an inspiring look at how strategic adaptation, innovation, and intentional workforce development can fuel long-term success, even in a highly competitive global market.
